Spiderman PC 2012 Review: A Web of Confusion

Developed by Beenox, the same studio behind previous Spider-Man games like Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time, The Amazing Spiderman for PC is an ambitious yet ultimately underwhelming experience. Released in 2012 as a tie-in to the movie of the same name starring Andrew Garfield, this game promised much but delivered very little.

The story follows our web-slinging hero as he navigates through open-world New York City, trying to uncover who impersonated him and committed a string of high-profile robberies. Along the way, Spiderman must face off against classic foes like Venom (who makes an appearance courtesy of his alter ego) while also dealing with personal issues back home.

Graphically speaking, The Amazing Spiderman for PC doesn't exactly impress. Textures are dated, character models lack detail and overall presentation feels more akin to a PS2-era game than something released in 2012. It's not all bad news however; when swinging through Manhattan or engaging in hand-to-hand combat with various baddies, the action does manage to hold some brief sparks of life.

Unfortunately though these moments are far too infrequent and soon get drowned out (pun intended) by poorly designed level design that encourages frustratingly linear navigation. Collecting collectibles becomes a chore rather than an enjoyable side-activity thanks to poorly signposted objectives and clunky controls that make even simple tasks feel like climbing Mount Everest without oxygen.

In conclusion, if you're a die-hard Spider-Man fan looking for something to pass the time until Insomniac's upcoming PS4 exclusive then perhaps The Amazing Spiderman might just do the trick. Everyone else however should probably give this lackluster effort from Beenox a wide berth and stick with one of its superior predecessors instead.
